Project to widen access to art

A PROJECT combining workshops and a national exhibition will provide a platform for artists who find it difficult to access the art world.

“Outside In” is an open-entry prize for those experiencing health issues, disability or other social circumstances, which may mean they are marginalised.

Hastings Museum & Art Gallery is to provide both practical workshops and a touring venue for the exhibition.

Bookings are now being taken for two workshops on Friday, January 27 between 10.30am and 12.30pm and 1.15pm and 3.15pm, to take place at the museum, in Bohemia Road.

The workshops will be led by specially trained artists, and will look at the work of well-known ‘outside’ artists such as Auerbach, Nash & Gertler, and explore a range of techniques and materials used by them.

Bookings are also being taken for one-to-one sessions at an Outside In Surgery Day on Friday, February 3, where individuals can get help to create an online gallery, write their artist’s statement, and photograph their work.

They can then choose to submit two pieces of art to go forward for selection for the Outside In national exhibition.

Councillor Trevor Webb, lead member for Leisure, said: “Outside In is a brilliant project that helps some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities to get much deserved recognition for their artwork.

“By being a partner in the project, Hastings Museum provides local people with an opportunity to get involved on their doorstep and we hope that once again, Hastings will be well represented by artists submitting their work, both online and for the exhibition.”
