A LOCAL firm is celebrating three and a half decades in the heart of Bexhill.
In April 1978 Rodney Gadsden bought Abbott & Abbott, an established firm of estate agents dating from 1937.
Abbott & Abbott have been selling property in Bexhill for 76 years and still going strong, specialising in the sale of residential property with straightforward approach.
Reflecting on the changes in the property market over the past 35 years, Rodney has revealed a number of typical selling prices at that time - for example
l a bungalow in St Peter’s Crescent was £19,750
l a town house in College Road £18,500
l a bungalow in Saltdean Way £27,500
l a four bedroom house in South Cliff Avenue £38,500
l a three bedroom house in Glenleigh Park Road £28,750
l a flat in Alderton Court £16,500.
“This means that average prices today have increased by about 1000 per cent during these 35 years.”
Rodney is fascinated to reflect on all the technological advances during this time, from five foot rules and leather tape measures to laser measuring, messy black and white Polaroid cameras to instant digital colour photography, even more messy Roneo duplicators, manual typewriters and carbon paper to high-tech copiers and computers, and finally to internet advertising giving world wide 24 hour promotion.
Rodney added: “I’ve found all these incredible changes stimulating and challenging, but I’ve not lost sight of the essence of the job, which is to give personal, professional, honest and caring service to all our clients and buyers alike”.
