THE FIRST week of plastic bottle kerbside recycling has been hailed a 'great success' by council chiefs.
Sixty-eight large sacks of plastic bottles weighing on average 10kg per sack were collected from the Meads and Old Town areas where the scheme was first introduced.

"This is a very impressive start considering it takes on average 20,000 plastic bottles to make up a tonne," said a council spokesperson.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Special Projects Councillor Troy Tester added, "The successful first week of the plastic bottles kerbside collection service is great news for Eastbourne.
"The amount collected clearly shows how dedicated residents are to recycling and we hope that this trend will continue and increase into the future.
"Eastbourne Borough Council is committed to improving the recycling rates in Eastbourne, and having plastic bottles collected from kerbside is another step in achieving our goals."
