Web guide aims to make area more accessible

A NEW web guide is to be compiled detailing the accessibility of 500 buildings and venues across the borough.

Hastings Borough Council and DisabledGo, in partnership with the Access for All group, have come together to develop a pioneering new web guide for disabled residents and visitors.

The free guide will feature on www.DisabledGo.com run by disability organisation DisabledGo, and will provide specific information such as the height of tables, dimensions of toilets or the positioning of fixtures and fittings.

Before it is compiled a community consultation event is planned for Tuesday, February 28 at 10.30am at the Stade Hall.

Disabled people are invited to come along to hear about the project, get involved and ask any questions they may have.

Crucially, the event aims to get local people to suggest which venues they would like to see included in their local access guide.

Councillor Jay Kramer, the council’s lead member for equalities, said: “The access guide should make a significant difference to disabled people who are visiting, living or working here.

“It means people can make informed decisions on where they want to go, which is a major equalities issue.

“I hope as many people as possible will attend the consultation event on 28 February so they can be a part of this exciting development for the town.”

DisabledGo will also be offering temporary paid employment opportunities as part of the project, for access surveyors.
