A POPULAR member of the 1066 Pipes and Drums band was giving a fitting send-off by former colleagues at his funeral service.

Around a dozen members escorted Bob Young’s hearse from the main gates to the crematorium while playing the traditional Scottish Soldier marching song.

Bob, 76, of Sedlescombe Road South, died on December 27 after an eight month battle against cancer of the oesophagus.

He had joined the band in 2001 and quickly became an integral part as a drummer making many friends and acquaintances.

More than 200 people packed into the crematorium to pay their last respects.

His coffin was carried in by his brothers Bill, Len and Dave and grandson James.

Morning Has Broken and Amazing Grace were sung during the service which was reduced to standing room only.

Bill said: “It was a funeral fit for a king and Bill had a proper send off.

“He would have been very proud of us as we are of him. The music meant everything to Bob and I’m sure it was a very fitting way to say goodbye.”

The band is always looking for new members. For more information call Dean Jinks on 01424 423301
