THE sexual health team at Station Plaza has received a national award for excellence in services towards young people.

It has been accredited with the Department of Health’s You’re Welcome award, which is a quality gold standard for health services that are young people friendly.

Tony Proom, clinical service manager, said: “We are delighted to have received the award. It has taken more than a year to obtain it with a lot of hard work. “Our service is unusual in that we are fully integrated, meaning staff are multi-qualified and we are a one-stop service under one roof. For example, if a woman came in for contraception, they could also be screened for potential infections. Sexual health can be difficult for young people to address and deal with so it is important that access to services is as easy as possible for them.”

The sexual health service in Hastings is run by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and saw more than 17,500 people last year, which is an increase of almost 3,500, compared to the previous 12 months. The team is made up of 31 members, including nurses, doctors, therapists and administration staff.

Services include testing and treatment of sexual transmitted infections, advice and provision of contraception and therapy for those with sexual problems. Health advisors are also available to give advice over the telephone or by appointment. The service is open Monday to Friday 8am to 7.15pm and prescriptions are free.
