Hastings & District meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays in the month - one social and one business meeting.
The last social meeting on February 11 was a talk by Ken Brooks on local geology. This was a fascinating talk. We learned that the land where Hastings is now was, millions of years ago, marshy land with inland lakes and freshwater sharks!
Dinosaurs roamed freely and we were shown a cast of a footprint found locally. Ken painted a vivid picture of this area millions of years ago and, I am sure, whetted our appetites to know more...
Our last social meeting on March 10 was a talk on environmental health from the local authority. We'll report on this in our next entry in these columns.
The President's lunch was held on March 1 at the Royal Victoria Hotel with an after lunch talk about Fair Trade from one of our sister Soroptimists, Penny Venness, who has visited Fair Trade farms in Rwanda.
We were also lucky to have as our guest the regionall President, Angela Howe and our own Deputy Mayoress, Vivienne Bond. Sadly, our own President, Rosemary, was unable to attend due to illness. She was sorely missed and flowers and a card were taken round to her after the lunch.
March 8 was International Women's Day and Soroptimists had hoped to be at the event organised by Hastings Women's Voice on that day, at St Mary in the Castle but, sadly, due to holidays and illness, we could not make it. Soroptimists wished everyone at the event a good day.
Please telephone Brenda on 426283 or Lynda on 424832 if you would like to come along to a social meeting and/or find out more about Soroptimists.
