The development will be on the site of the Old House Depository in Claremont Road.

The application by Lewes developers Rees Elliott is for a mix of one and two bedroom flats as well as basement car parking for 62 cars.

There will also be an access from Claremont Road to Station Approach. The existing building, which was once a bus garage, will be demolished and a modern block put up in its place, arranged around two courtyards.

The revised application was generally welcomed by Seaford Town Council at an earlier meeting of its planning committee but some members who sit on the district council still had some concerns.

Cllr Bob Allen said: 'Generally, I welcome the revised design but I am still rather concerned about the overlooking of some properties.

'The other thing I welcome is the public open space which I think is very attractive and more importantly, provides a direct link to the station from the properties in Brooklyn and Claremont Road.

'I also welcome the care that had been taken in the design to realise that the road is at sea level and if Seaford were to flood it would be at risk but all the low parts are garaging and non residential accommodation.'

Cllr Ian White said: 'I would just like to make the point that people in Seaford are getting a bit fed up of the number of flats that are being imposed on us.

'Although I support this particular scheme, developers should start thinking more about housing than in terms of flats.'

Lap Chan, from Morgan Carn architects who are behind the project, said: 'This proposal in front of you represents a comprehensive design at a very difficult site.

'The design complies with all the council's policies, all the parking is off-street and it provides 25 per cent affordable housing.

'It is the result of a long consultation with the public, the town council and the town centre partnership.'

Eight members of the district planning committee voted in favour and one abstained.
